A little bit about ourselves |
The Nelson Transport Strategy Group (NELSUST) Inc. is an incorporated society with a wide transport vision for the good of the whole region, with a focus on our region providing enticing alternative transport options to car commuting. Our aim is not to force people out of cars, but to encourage them to choose something better for the city, their health and the planet by offering attractive alternative transport options.
Our goal is to establish our city as one for people; a vibrant Nelson - not a city choked with cars.
In 2004, we were one of 3 bodies that took Transit and the Nelson City Council to the Environment Court over the Southern Link Arterial Road. And we won; the court ruled the route as being "fundamentally the wrong place for a state highway".
We have been working hard on providing alternatives to roading expansion which is a proven failure to reduce congestion. At the same time, NELSUST is working to hard to support the improvement of Rocks Road and Tahunanui via the diversion of large trucks through Nelson South, Victory and the city with the log barging proposal. This aims to get 35,000 of the largest trucks off Rocks Rd, Tahunaui Drive and out of Richmond each year at zero additional cost, by reducing double handling and freeing up valuable port land.
NELSUST has worked hard on solutions to provide an appealing shared path around the seaward side of Rocks Road. We have helped develop cycling links through Tahunanui, and pushed for them to extend through to Nayland primary & secondary schools.
NELSUST has been successful in advocating for Express buses from Wakefield and Motueka, for lighting the Railway Reserve, for providing a summer 'beach bus' between the city and Tahunanui beach, and for making cycling (and walking) safe, pleasant and convenient in our beautiful region.
